Return to Rapture in high definition with remastered textures, high resolution models and 4K support. Take an intense journey through one of the most gripping game worlds ever created. Play as a Big Daddy and unleash the raw power of Rapture's most feared against deadly enemies such as Brute Splicers and Big Sisters. If you build it, they will come – BioShock Remastered is coming to Mac OS X very soon. BioShock, the stellar immersive sim from 2007, has been available for Mac OS X since October 2009. 2010's BioShock 2 would follow in March 2012, and BioShock Infinite – originally released for PC and consoles in March 2013 – would appear on Mac a mere six months later, in August 2013.

The release date for BioShock Remastered on Mac will come one day after the original game celebrates its 10 year anniversary.

The 10th anniversary of the original BioShock will be on August 21, but Mac OS publisher has something special planned for the next day. On August 22, BioShockRemastered will launch on Mac.

Back when it originally released for PC and Xbox 360 on August 21, 2007, BioShock shocked many with its dark tale of an alternative 1960 reality. The ideals of Rapture, a city meant to be an underwater utopia, have gone horribly awry. The game's main character must undergo transformations, literally rewriting his genetic code in order to combat the citizens of Rapture who have utterly lost their minds. But Rapture holds terrible truths at the bottom of the ocean. It will take courage to discover them all.

BioShock Remastered originally released within BioShock: The Collection in 2016. The game will become available on the Feral Interactive store and Steam for $19.99 when it releases on August 22. Shortly after that, it will become available on the App Store for $19.99.

If you're curious how this port might turn out, you can take the original BioShock's port to OS X as an example, as Feral Interactive was also responsible for that.

Hopes for a BioShock film may be dashed for the time being, but if you were wondering what happened to it, director Gore Verbinski recently detailed his impressions of why the project was doomed.

Then BioShock: The Collection launched in September 2016, and everything changed. A bit.

BioShock Infinite, which was relatively recent and didn't need a remaster, stayed largely untouched. But BioShock and BioShock 2 – in a creaking customised Unreal Engine ‘2.5' – were showing their age, and they were remastered. Hard. It wasn't always positive.

Merits of remastering aside, the interesting thing is that while BioShock: The Collection was available to current-generation console players and PC gamers alike as a retail/digital bundle, if you already owned the games on Steam, you automatically got access to the remasters (except Infinite, which didn't need it).

That's a nice touch. In a world where some people have literally bought Final Fantasy VII five or six times – for various different platforms over the years – it's nice to see free upgrades and updates.

And the net result of this automatic upgrade was that the Steam store listings for BioShock and BioShock 2 automatically ‘upgraded' to the remastered versions of the game. That sounds great, but it's unfortunately a bit of a problem if you were wanting to buy them on Mac or Linux; the remastered versions weren't available for non-Windows operating systems. But that ends soon. Well, for the original BioShock, at least; Feral Interactive are releasing a Mac version of BioShock Remastered on August 22nd, 2017.

This will effectively ‘fix' the Steam store listing for BioShock Remastered for Mac OS X, but news on a Linux version – or BioShock 2 Remastered – are still forthcoming.

Correction, August 16th, 2017:

War for the Overworld is developed by an independent team of fanatical developers, each with a true love of the dungeon management genre. We have continued to update the game since launch, with countless patches, balancing, polish, and many new features. War for the overworld ultimate edition for mac download.

Feral Interactive have been in touch to point out that their Mac OS X port of BioShock (2009) has not been available for Steam before; only via their own online store, the Mac App Store, or other third party outlets, like Green Man Gaming. They were not in fact rendered unavailable by the remaster updates to the Steam store listings as was originally stated.

The impending release of the Mac version of BioShock Remastered – on August 22nd, 2017 – therefore also marks the game's debut for OS X via the Steam store. Apologies for any confusion, and thanks again to Feral Interactive for the correction.

Further correction, August 16th, 2017:

Turns out that the BioShock 2 Steam store listing has effectively been ‘replaced' by the update to remastered copies, as originally stated in the article. If you access the Steam app listing for BioShock 2 it effectively redirects you to the BioShock 2 Remastered listing.

Note the difference in operating system icons (Mac vs Windows) on the two listings.

The BioShock 2 Remastered listing does also include a key for the original version, but there is currently no way to access the original BioShock 2 listing on the Steam store due to this redirect.

Only the Windows icon displays on the listing for BioShock 2 Remastered.

As a result of operating system filtering within Steam search, and the way the updated listing is displayed, this has become somewhat confusing for non-Windows users. And us.

The original version of BioShock 2 is still available from the Feral Interactive store, though. This will then supply you a Steam key, which you can redeem via the Steam client.
